This God of War guide will reveal how to fully upgrade the Leviathan Axe to its max Level 6.

A special resource called a Frozen Flame is required for every upgrade of the Leviathan Axe, and upgrades can only be performed at a Huldra shop.

The first four Frozen Flames required to upgrade the Leviathan to Level 5 are all simply acquired by progressing through the main story.

This chart shows at which point and during which Chapter of the story you receive these first four Frozen Flames.

The last one thats acquired during the story is given to you at the end of Chapter 7: The Magic Chisel, which sees the Leviathan Axe hit Level 5.

However to acquire the final 5th Frozen Flame to upgrade the Leviathan Axe to max Level 6 involves a far more complex process and requires you to acquire a unique resource called the ‘Chilling Mists of Niflheim’.

This special resource is then used to buy the final 5th Frozen Flame from a Huldra Shop.

The very first thing you need to do before you can acquire the ‘Chilling Mists of Niflheim’ is to gain access to the locked realm of Niflheim, and this is achieved by acquiring four language Ciphers from special Niflheim Cipher Chests.

I have created another video guide covering everything you need to know about Niflheim which also covers how to acquire the four Niflheim Language Ciphers.

So if you still need to collect more Ciphers, I recommend you check out that guide which I have linked below, the video version is timestamped for your convenience, so you can use it as a quick reference.

Once you acquire all four Niflheim Language Ciphers, this will complete the Favor named: ‘The Realm of Fog’ which means you can now gain access to the Niflheim realm using the Bitfrost at Tyr’s Temple.

Upon reaching Niflheim you will need to complete the first of three Favors named: ‘Ivaldi’s Workshop’.

This Favor given to you by Sindri, requires you to acquire 500 Mist Echoes so he can craft you an Entry Stone, to gain access to the Central Chamber where the Chilling Mists of Niflheim resides.

Every time you enter the lower foggy parts of Niflhem, you will notice a pink bar appear at the top of the screen. If you stay in this fog the pink bar will slowly drain and if it drains completely, your health will then start to deplete.

If your health completely drains while you remain in the fog you will die and lose all the resources you collected since the last time you entered the fog.

So the goal is to collect as many resources as possible while in the fog, then leave the fog before your health drains, this will then permanently bank all of your collected resources in your inventory.

You can exit the fog back to safety by going back to Sindri’s Shop or entering the Central Chamber once its accessible.

All chests and coffins in Niflheim reward you with Mist Echoes when opened, and Mist Echoes are the primary resource of the realm used to craft some of the best items in the game.

Since every chest and coffin resets every time you exit the fog, you can simply keep entering and exiting the starting area to open the same few chests over and over again.

This is fine for a few hundred Mist Echoes for crafting the Entry Stone. However for more expensive crafting, like crafting and upgrading the Mist Armor, which requires several thousand Mist Echoes, this tactic will take far too long.

As you venture deeper into the more dangerous and risky sections of the maze the chests will offer more Mist Echoes, and the more chests you open the higher the reward in the next opened chest will be, this resets every time you exit the fog.

So if your plan is to maximise your Mist Echo farming, you will need to remain in the fog and open every chest in the maze before exiting.

Make sure to check out my full walkthrough guide on Niflheim linked in the description, which demonstrates how to open every chest in the maze in a single run.

It also uncovers how to significantly increase your fog timer so you can remain in the fog much longer, how to get and upgrade the best Mist armor and many more tips and tricks.

Since this video is focused on upgrading the Leviathan Axe to its max Level 6, we only need to farm Mist Echoes for two things.

The first is to gather 500 Mist Echoes for Sindri to craft an Entry Stone so you can gain access to the Central Chamber.

The second is to farm a further 5000 Mist Echoes so once inside Central Chamber you can access a locked golden chest which contains the Chilling Mists of Niflheim.

You can quickly farm the initial 500 Mist Echoes for the Entry Stone by entering the starting area, killing the enemies, looting the 2 or 3 chests, then exiting the fog to reset. Do this 3 or 4 times and you should have your 500 Mist Echoes.

You can then buy the Entry Stone from Sindri and place it in the pedestal in the starting area which opens the gate to the Central Chamber.

The Central Chamber houses 5 Golden Legendary Chests and 3 Realm Tear Rifts which are all initially locked, and require Resources to gain access.

From left to right going clock-wise around the area, this table details exactly what resources are required to unlock each container, as well as what loot resides within.

For now we are only interested in Legendary Chest number 3 as it contains the ‘Chilling Mists of Niflheim’ required to buy the final Frozen Flame to max level the Leviathan Axe.

As previously mentioned it requires 5000 Mist Echoes to open, to acquire these you will need to venture deeper into the maze and open as many chests as possible.

If you can manage to clear the first 3 rooms opening all chests you come across on the way, not forgetting to open the chests hidden in the trap corridors, then re-trace your steps back to safety, you can easily gather over 1000 Mist Echoes per run.

If you are having trouble gathering enough Mist Echoes per run, It may be a good idea to get Sindri to craft one or two additional items that increase your fog resistance.

These are the Grip of the Maze which is a Legendary Axe Pommel granting a very high proc chance to restore some of your fog bar on every kill as well as a passive resistance to the fog reducing its drain speed, this Pommel costs 1500 Mist Echoes to craft as well as some Hacksilver.

He can also craft a Legendary Talisman which permanently extends the fog timer when worn and restores health when activated, this Talisman costs 1000 Mist Echoes to craft as well as some Hacksilver.

You may also consider grabbing the Eye of Niflheim which is an Epic Enchantment from chest number two in the Central Chamber.

This Enchantment will greatly increase your fog resistance, however you will need 2500 Mist Echoes to unlock the chest.

Crafting and equipping a complete set of Ivaldi’s Mist Armor will offer the most resistance to the fog, but these armor sets require a significant amount of Mist Echo and epic resource farming, so are more of a long term investment.

As previously mentioned dont forget to check out my full Niflheim guide if you want to reveal all the epic secrets this realm has to offer, including an indepth guide on how to unlock and fully upgrade the aforementioned Mist Armor:

Once you manage to gather 5000 Mist Echoes, go back to the Central Chamber and open Legendary Chest 3 to obtain the Chilling Mists of Niflheim.

Now all you need to do is head back to Sindri and go to the Buy menu to buy the final Frozen Flame, you can now use this to Upgrade the Leviathan to max Level 6.

Good job Spartan, Happy Decapitating!
